AMSTERDAM – The chemical industry in the Netherlands is getting safer and cleaner in its operations, according to a report released on Thursday by the Dutch Chemical Industry Association (VNCI).

The number of accidents in 2004 fell for the fourth consecutive year, and the majority of companies are already keeping below pollution levels set to be achieved by 2010.

Emissions of 61 of the 74 substances classified as environmentally damaging fell so far that they have already met norms established for 2010. Only the reduction of nitrogenous gasses (NOx) is behind schedule for meeting the 2010 rules.
