Cheaper mobile calls expected in 2010

Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Frank Heemskerk says he expects the cost of mobile telephone calls and mobile internet use to fall in 2010.

THE NETHERLANDS - This will happen thanks to increased competition from new providers.

Currently, mobile telephone calls and mobile internet use are controlled by three companies: KPN, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

However, if new frequencies are made available next year, then three new companies will be able to bid for customers.

Mr Heemskerk expects the cable companies Ziggo and UPC to be interested in the offer.

The frequencies are also expected to make extra services, such as super fast internet access, available.
