HOOGEVEEN – It may never be clear why personnel and visitors to the Annen Animal Center in Hoogeveen became ill earlier this week. Mayor Willem Urlings of Hoogeveen said this on Tuesday evening.

"No substance has yet been found on the scene to explain what happened."

Investigation carried out so far has not provided an explanation. "We are mainly concentrating now on after care for the people who were taken to the UMCG in Groningen on Monday and the people who reported there," the mayor said.

No new reports of symptoms came in on Tuesday from people who had visited the centre.

The wholesale animal store and immediate vicinity remain cordoned off. The mayor said the animals at the centre were all being taken care of.
