AMSTERDAM – The police arrested three suspects on Saturday evening in connection with the car fires in Amsterdam. The three young men are suspected of preparing an arson attempt, a spokesperson said on Sunday afternoon.
The boys, aged 16, 17 and 19, all from Amsterdam-West, had a plastic cola bottle filled with petrol when they were arrested at about 11.15 pm on Saturday on the President Allendelaan near the Sloterpark.
The boys have been in trouble with the police before, the spokesperson said.
"Officers saw the three individuals fill the bottle with petrol at a petrol station on the Burgemeester Rendorpstraat. Since the individuals did not have a vehicle and in light of the recent incidents in Amsterdam-West the officers got suspicious."
There has been unrest in Amsterdam-West for a week already after a police sergeant shot and killed 22-year-old Bilal B. in a police station in Slotervaart. B. had knifed the sergeant and a colleague, leaving them seriously injured.
Cars have been set on fire every night since last Monday. On Saturday five cars were set alight.
More than 30 cars were damaged in an indoor parking garage on the Dr. H. Colijnstraat in Geuzenveld/Slotermeer on Saturday night. Police say the perpetrators were looking for valuables.
A number of items were stolen from the cars. The windows were broken on the most of the cars in the garage and the vehicles were scratched. One car was entirely destroyed. Police have not yet made any arrests in that case.
