Captain missing after Dutch ferry collision

A cargo ship has rammed a ferry that carries cyclists and pedestrians across the Amsterdam-Rhine canal in the Netherlands.

The emergency services have been at the scene of the collision - between Breukelen and Nieuwer Ter Aa - for a number of hours and are using sonar equipment to search for casualties. No one has yet been pulled from the water.

The ferry captain is still missing and the company that operates the boat has expressed concern that he may not have survived. The authorities think he may have been the only person aboard the ferry. It usually carries large numbers of schoolchildren but this week is an autumn school holiday.

The cause of the collision is still not known. The captain of the German cargo ship is being questioned by police.
