LEIDSCHENDAM – The Efteling no longer tops the list as the most popular daytrip in the Netherlands. Boat trips around the Amsterdam canals drew more visitors last year. The canal tour is now in the lead among the 20 most popular attractions in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC) announced the list on Tuesday. Some 3.1 million people took a tour of Amsterdam by canal in 2006. Amusement park De Efteling in Kaatsheuvel, for years the undisputed public favourite, came in second place with 3 million visitors.

The NBTC said that Amsterdam attractions fared particularly well last year, partly because of the successful Rembrandt 400 festivities.

The Van Gogh Museum sold 1.7 million tickets, moving it up from fifth to third place on the list.

Animal parks Burger's Zoo and Blijdorp Zoo completed the top five with 1.5 million and 1.4 million visitors, respectively.

Amsterdam also saw a record number of overnight guests in 2006 – 4.6 million visitors spent a night in the capital, according to figures from the Amsterdam Tourism and Congress Board. Hotels and other accommodations received 6 percent more guests than in 2005.
