Canal barge rams lock gates

A canal barge rammed the gates of a lock in the northern Dutch town of Gaarkeuken early on Sunday afternoon.

The lock gates were so damaged that they needed to be replaced immediately. A police representative said that canal traffic on the Van Starkenborgh canal would therefore probably disrupted until midnight.

The representative said the barge’s skipper admitted to making a wrong manoeuvre and that this led to his vessel ramming the gates. The barge was carrying a cargo of soya pellets from Friesland to Groningen.
