AMSTERDAM — Global wanderer and Canadian Jean Béliveau, 51, is currently walking across the Netherlands.

Béliveau started on his journey six years ago and has already passed through North and South America and Africa.

He is now walking across Europe and wandered through media city Hilversum in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

In total, his journey will take 12 years to complete. He will have walked 70,000km.

Béliveau is at the half-way point and has crossed 36 countries, wearing out about 30 pairs of shoes along the way.

After his European leg, Béliveau will walk through Asia and Oceania, aiming to arrive back in Canada in 2012.

The global wanderer started on his epic journey around the time of his 45th birthday, citing a mid-life crisis as his motivating reason.

He is campaigning for peace for children and has linked up with UNESCO. He has already been awarded an honorary medallion.

After leaving the Netherlands, Béliveau will travel through Germany, where he hopes to meet up with his son.

He greatly misses family and friends and has become a grandfather twice since starting out on his journey. Béliveau's father recently passed away as well.
