Call to ban unhealthy food ads for under-12s

The Dutch Consumers Association wants the government to forbid food manufacturers from advertising unhealthy foods intended for children under 12.

THE NETHERLANDS - The association made its demand in response to the cabinet's release, on Friday, of its plan to combat obesity.

The plan called on food producers not to direct adverts for unhealthy food to children under 12. It did not expressly forbid them from so doing.

The Consumers Association says it has little faith that the producers will regulate their own advertising and called for a legally binding ban.

The association also wants to see one clear logo on food products stating whether or not they contain saturated fat, sugar or salt.

At present, food products use many different types of labels to list their ingredients.
