THE NETHERLANDS - The Council for Dutch Retail Trade wants Environment Minister Jacqueline Cramer to examine government subsidies to environmental organisations, in particular those to Friends of the Earth.

The council says such organisations regularly subject retailers to questionable investigations that seem to be designed to drive companies and shop chains out of business. The Council finds such behaviour strange, especially given that it's conducted with taxpayers' money.

The council referred in particular to an investigation by Friends of the Earth into garden furniture made from so-called 'good' and 'bad' wood. Retailers who scored low were given the Blunt Axe Award. The council said the investigation was incomplete.

The council also named the Society for Nature and the Environment and the Clean Clothes Campaign as organisations that misuse their subsidies.
