AMSTERDAM — The Cabinet was locked in a crisis meeting all of Wednesday afternoon to discuss the parliamentary motion of no confidence against Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk.

Liberal VVD leader Mark Rutte has threatened to pull all of the VVD ministers out of the cabinet if Verdonk resigns.

In political circles in The Hague, however, it is expected that the entire cabinet will resign if the VVD ministers pull out.

Other sources have said that Christian Democrat CDA ministers want to work on a compromise, but that the VVD would block that.

It is also possible that the cabinet will reject the motion against Verdonk as being unfeasible given the caretaker status of the cabinet.

In that case, the coalition cabinet would continue to govern the nation in a caretaker role.
