AMSTERDAM – The gay rights advocacy group COC will talk with Defence about the incident in which soldiers assaulted six men at a parking lot along the A12. "Everything seems to indicate this was an instance of queer-bashing," COC chairman Frank van Dalen said on Wednesday.

Five soldiers assaulted six men at the Ginkelse Zand parking lot near Ede on 10 and 11 July. All five suspects have confessed, a spokesperson for the Royal Marechaussee has said. The soldiers, ranging in age from 19 to 22, have all been suspended.

Van Dalen suspects that the incident was motivated by homophobia. "The parking lot is a well-known meeting place for homosexual men. Moreover, only one man has filed a report, and only after police had distributed flyers. That is a familiar pattern."

A delegation from the defence ministry will be participating in the Pink Saturday Parade in Bergen op Zoom on Saturday. Van Dalen will welcome the delegation and say he will "certainly mention the assault case."

"I will tell them that participation in this event is good for their reputation, now that they are in the news with these kinds of incidents."

The COC wants more legislation to protect the men that visit known gay meeting places, like the parking lot at which this particular incident took place. Many of the men who come here for sex pretend to be heterosexual to the outside world.

"It seems as if these parking lots have become a haven for gay bashers to take out their aggression," Van Dalen says.
