BLANKENBERGE – The weekend of 4 and 5 August was by far the best weekend of the year for the tourism sector on the coast. Tens of thousands of tourists headed to the beaches by train and by car to enjoy the sunny weather.

"This is the best weekend of the year," says beach chair vendor Eddy Van Wulpen from Blankenberge. "After all, July was comparable to your average April."

The rental sector was flooded with inquiries at the end of last week. It was already difficult to find places to stay on Thursday. When most hotels on the coast filled up, people turned to accommodation a little further inland. Though rooms were in short supply there too on Saturday. Camp grounds and offices offering rental apartments had difficulty keeping up with demand.

Owners of restaurants, tearooms and shops were also pleased at turnover this weekend and are hoping for a sunny August and a long, warm and dry autumn.

Railways brought 21,000 travellers to the coast on Saturday. Three extra trains were in operation. Some 30,000 people took a day trip to the coast by train on Sunday. Five extra trains were deployed.
