AMSTERDAM — The Dutch parliament will begin the budget debate next week and the financial discussions will be held a week after that, Lower House of Parliament chairman Frans Weisglas said on Wednesday.

After meeting with the nation's political leaders, Weisglas said a decision was taken to have the discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm, who will represent the coalition government.

The parliament has decided against waiting for the recovery of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who is presently in hospital after undergoing surgery last week on a severely infected foot. He is expected to be inactive for at least another two to three weeks.

Weisglas said it was undesirable to wait so long before holding the parliamentary discussions around the budget. The first part of the debate will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
