A Dutchman has been detained in Chile on charges of involvement in the double murder of an elderly couple in Amsterdam in 1997. Police in Amsterdam confirmed reports in various Spanish media concerning 36-year-old Remmert Daniel Blankevoort’s arrest.

In November 1997, Henk Opentij 79 and his girlfriend and neighbour, Mary Run 73, were murdered in a gruesome fashion in one of their homes in the north of Amsterdam. Their throats were slit and both had multiple stab wounds.

The double murder case remained unsolved but police re-opened the file last December when new DNA evidence was found. Chilean authorities have confirmed that DNA found on the bodies matches that of the suspect. Mr Blankevoort was about to travel to the US when he was apprehended.
