THE HAGUE – Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings wants to introduce the breathalyser ignition lock a year earlier than planned. He wants the device to prevent intoxicated drivers from starting their cars to be required for repeat DUI offenders from 2008 rather than 2009.

The device, which can be easily installed in any motor vehicle, blocks the car from starting if the driver has too much alcohol on his breath.

Eurlings also wants more traffic safety lessons in school.

The minister announced these measures today after the release of the traffic fatality figures for last year. There was only a marginal decline in the number of deaths on the roads, from 817 in 2005 to 811 in 2006.
