AMSTERDAM – The municipality of Renswoude is going to explain to youth the significance of monuments and the fact they should be respected. Vandals destroyed the municipal monument to the resistance last year by setting fire to it.

The vandalism was presumably the work of young people, Mayor Hugo Schorer said on Monday.

The municipality has put together a booklet on the lives of the seven heroes of the resistance who were honoured by the monument in the hope that it will not again fall prey to vandalism.

The book is called "Respect for those who fell" and is written by Simone Beijer.

The mayor handed over the book to the directors of the two primary schools in town on Monday evening and to the survivors of the resistance heroes. The booklet will also be sent to every home in the community. "The incident was very shocking to Renswoude. That is why we are doing everything to prevent this from happening again."

The restoration of the heavily damaged monument will start next week.
