The suspect who allegedly killed Marlies van der Kouwe in Bonaire broke out of jail by sawing the iron bars of a window.

BONAIRE – One of the suspected murderers of Marlies van der Kouwe has escaped from prison with another inmate.

The suspect whose involvement in the murder of the Dutch chemist’s assistant in Bonaire remains unclear had sawn the iron bars of a window to escape, said police.

Van der Kouwe disappeared in late September while she was on her way home after a beach party. She was seen dragged from her bicycle.

A month later, the 24-year-old’s body was discovered near a landfill after torrential rains accompanying Hurricane Omar washed away the sand covering her shallow grave.

The main suspect in the case, Ryan Pieters, who has confessed to the murder, is being held at a prison in Curaçao.
