SCHIPHOL – During the past few weeks the Marechaussee at Schiphol have detained a large number of passengers who by way of a joke said they were carrying a bomb or arms. “The past weeks we had five or so,” a spokesperson for the Marechaussee said on Friday, following a news report in the AD.

According to the spokesperson, these are passengers who want to play jokes when checking in or even on board the plane. The consequences however are very serious. In these cases the Marechaussee is under an obligation to interfere and detain the joker. This individual is given a penalty up to EUR 600. In addition, airline companies always refuse to accept those passengers and consequently they will miss their flight.

If the suitcases of passengers have already been loaded onto the aircraft, the plane must be unloaded, and investigated by sniffer dogs. In those cases the airline companies will try and claim compensation for the delay from the jokers.

The spokesperson for the Marechaussee indicated that people play these kinds of jokes a couple of dozen times a year. “But during the holidays there is always a peak.” During the summer season large groups of people often go on holiday in very high spirits.
