AMSTERDAM — Police are investigating a bomb attack on a home in the south-eastern town of Heerlen on Wednesday night.

The Fire Brigade originally thought a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the house on the Mesdagstraat. But a police spokesperson said on Thursday that the blast was caused by a more powerful explosive device.

Local people heard a "gigantic" explosion at about 23.30pm. It blew away the door of one of the terraced houses and dislodged the front door of a neighbour's home. Windows of houses on the other side of the street were also shattered.

The residents of the targeted home were in the building at the time but escaped injury. Police sealed off the area and began a forensic examination.
