AMSTERDAM — A confused man threatened to blow up the McDonald's restaurant on the Nieuwendijk in the centre of Amsterdam on Thursday morning.
The unnamed man had been sitting in the restaurant for a long time and refused to leave when requested to do so by staff. He then claimed in English that he had a bomb.
Police sealed off the area around the restaurant and an officer in plain clothes entered the building. When the suspect began further harassing the McDonald's staff the officer intervened and overpowered him.
A police spokesman said later that the man appeared to be from Scandinavia. His bag was searched and found to contain only dirty clothes.
The man was arrested.
