EINDHOVEN – The remains of Cor Strik, the soldier killed in Afghanistan last Friday, arrived at the air force base in Eindhoven on Tuesday evening.

Eight officers of the Royal Army carried the coffin, which was draped with the Dutch flag. The body was handed over to his family after a short ceremony.

During a patrol, Strik stepped on an explosive presumably planted by Taliban fighters and was killed instantly.

A military ceremony was also held at the international ISAF base in Kandahar on Monday.

He is the first Dutch soldier to be killed in war-related violence in Afghanistan.

The family will hold a private funeral for Strik in Amersfoort today.
