Divers found a body after a collision Friday between a cargo ship and a small barge on a canal in the central Netherlands in which the skipper of the barge went missing, police said.

"Police divers have found a body in the Amsterdam-Rijn canal, at the spot where the barge was capsized in a collision" at Nieuwer Ter Aa, northwest of the city of Utrecht, a police statement said about eight hours after the incident.

"The identity of the body has not been ascertained."

A German cargo ship collided with the barge around 7:00 am (0500 GMT) on Friday, prompting a massive search for the skipper of the barge -- which is used to transport bicycles and pedestrians across the canal.
