THE NETHERLANDS - Bicycle sales in the Netherlands have increased substantially in the past two years.

The bicycle sector reported a 15 percent increase in turnover in 2006, followed by a 9 percent increase in 2007. As the prices of bicycles have remained roughly the same, Statistics Netherlands concludes that the increase is mostly due to higher sales.

The trend appears to be continuing, with turnover in the first quarter of this year up 3 percent. Bicycle shops do most business in spring and summer, for which no figures are yet available.

More than 1.4 million bikes were sold in 2007.
