Dutch foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has summoned the Belorussian ambassador to express his alarm at the expulsion from Belarus of the Polish ambassador and the head of the European delegation in Minsk.

Earlier this week, the EU recalled all its ambassadors to Belarus for talks following the Belorussian move which came in answer to European Union sanctions. It was decided that Belorussian ambassadors to all EU countries should be summoned to explain the situation.

Mr Rosenthal has told the ambassador of his concerns about the human rights situation in Belarus. “Political prisoners and the intimidation of political parties and of those advocating human rights are the daily reality for people in Belarus. Unacceptable!” he said.

Belarus is said to be the last dictatorship in Europe. President Alexander Lukashenko rules the country with an iron fist.

Mr Rosenthal say the Netherlands will work towards putting further pressure on the Belarus regime through the use of EU sanctions.
