Belgium honours former RNW editor-in-chief

Former RNW editor-in-Chief Joop Daalmeijer received a royal honour on Friday at the Belgian embassy in The Hague. He was knighted as an Officer in the Order of Leopold, the highest Belgian distinction.

Mr Daalmeijer, 65, was awarded the honour for his commitment, spanning more than 25 years, to improving cooperation between the Netherlands and Belgium in the fields of culture and media. He was responsible for the exchange of programmes on current events, and also initiated several Dutch-Flemish drama productions when he was network coordinator at Dutch Public Broadcasting 1998-2005.

Amongst other things, Mr Daalmeijer sits on the board of the Flemish-Dutch House deBuren "the neigbours" in Brussels, a platform for debate about culture, science, politics and society in Flanders, the Netherlands and Europe. He is also a lecturer for the Flanders Audiovisual Fund. From 2005 to 2008 he was Editor-in-Chief of Radio Netherlands Worldwide. He is currently Director-General of Dutch public broadcaster NTR.
