AMSTERDAM – "Millions of people drink beer each day. Millions who have been systematically taken for a ride by the pricing agreements between Heineken, Grolsch and Bavaria."  Freedom Party PVV MP Dion Graus wants the brewers to halve the price of beer for the coming three years "as a gesture to the public."

Graus has no problem with the EUR 273 million in fines that the European Commission imposed on the brewers this week.

"But it is really unacceptable that these same brewers might recover the damage by increasing the beer price in future. We are a country of beer drinkers, certainly in Limburg where I come from."

Graus says the government should exert pressure on the three companies to lower their prices by calling senior management to account.

"I can't imagine that Heineken, a world-famous company, will not do anything to make amends. That would be a blemish on the Netherlands' reputation. The PVV is still being very courteous: we are asking Heineken very politely to make a gesture to the citizen."
