AMSTERDAM — A network of bat enthusiasts in Limburg expects to receive a lot of complaints about bats during the next few days. The warm weather is bringing the creatures out of their hiding places and they are now being seen in living rooms and bedrooms with open windows, the network said on Tuesday.

Town halls throughout the province of Limburg have a complaints desk for people who are having trouble with bats. If necessary (and at no charge) the complaints desks can send a “bat worker” to catch the animals, which are protected. The province of Limburg is financing the project. The network has handled around 800 complaints since 1999.

Bats can live for years in the hollow walls of a house without making themselves noticed. The insect eaters do not make nests and also do not gnaw wood. They just enjoy the shelter, the peace and the warmth.
