Ban on polluting vehicles into city centres postponed
Dutch Environment Minister Jacqueline Cramer is postponing the measure after some experts say some new vehicles are more polluting than older ones.THE HAGUE – Environment Minister Jacqueline Cramer has postponed a measure banning old polluting delivery vans and lorries from city centres.
The minister who wrote to the lower house of parliament said it will be at least three years before environmental zones will be established in the big cities.
Only latest car models were to be allowed into the zones, on the assumption that they are cleaner than older vehicles.
However, a number of cars built between 2000 and 2006 actually produce more carbon monoxide than older types, reports popular daily De Telegraaf.
Local authorities and companies will work on an alternative to the environmental zones.
