AMSTERDAM − The search for a missing Dutchman on Mont Blanc in France was called off due to bad weather on Monday. There are now grave fears for the safety of the man and his French guide.

French rescue teams have been searching for the two men since Saturday, using dogs and helicopters in a bid to locate them. It is feared that the men have been buried under an avalanche of snow.

On the ascent up the northern edge of the mountain, the Dutchman became exhausted and his guide resolved to take him back down the mountain.

The gendarmerie in Chamonix searched in vain for the two men on Saturday and Sunday. It is now considered probable that both men are dead.
