Public broadcaster VPRO is pushing the envelope with its new television quiz Weg van Nederland , in which five young failed asylum seekers can win money to build a new life in their country of origin.

The name of the programme can be translated as either ‘Crazy about the Netherlands’, referring to the candidates knowledge about the country, or ‘Away from the Netherlands’ in an oblique reference to the candidates imminent expulsion.

The winner will receive a cash prize of 4,000 euros to make a new start in their native countries. In order to win, the – highly educated – candidates must correctly answer a series of questions on Dutch language and culture. The quiz is VPRO’s submission for the theme week TV Lab.

According to a spokesperson “ It’s a way of giving a face to failed asylum seekers. They know they have to go back and can utilise their knowledge to earn a substantial amount. TV Lab is obviously about pushing the envelope. That’s what it’s for.”

Among the candidates taking part in the unusual quiz is an aviation technology student who has to return to Cameroon soon. She will be facing a Slavic languages student who is to be deported to Chechnya.
