Armed robbers hold up Artis

27 August 2007

AMSTERDAM  - Two men robbed the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam at about 9 am this morning. They forced their way into the cashier's booth at the main entrance, a spokesperson for the zoo said on Monday. They threatened cashier personnel with a firearm and demanded money.

The robbers made off with an unknown amount of cash and fled on a scooter. No personnel were injured. "But we are all very shocked," the spokesperson said.

The zoo had just opened this morning, but there were not many visitors yet at the time of the robbery. The main entrance on the Plantage Kerklaan is closed for investigation this morning but visitors can enter the zoo via a side entrance near the Planetarium.
