Arab League must take action against Syria
Democratic party D66 wants Foreign Affairs Minister Uri Rosenthal and the European Union to force the Arab League into action against Syria. This stance was announced on Wednesday by party leader Alexander Pechtold.
The League, of which Syria is a member, cannot stand by and do nothing as violence against demonstrators continues in the country, said Pechtold.
Europe and the United States have put sanctions in place against Syria and D66 says it would be an important signal if the Arab countries would participate. They say the Syrian regime is beyond criticism and their actions can no longer be dismissed.
Since 31 July, the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, hundreds of demonstrators have been killed in Syria. It is considered the bloodiest reaction to protest since unrest began there in mid-March.
