THE NETHERLANDS -- The Data Management Group, a government body which is responsible for the administration of student grants, says there has been an 11 percent reduction in applications for teacher training colleges in the Netherlands.

The organisation says the reduction is as high as 25 percent among applicants with higher secondary qualifications.

There has also been an increase in the number of applicants who had to sit an admission exam because of inadequate previous training.

The Data Management Group could not explain the decrease. It said it might have been caused by negative publicity about inadequate language and arithmetic skills among students at teacher training colleges.
