THE HAGUE - A court of appeals in The Hague has convicted anti-paedophilia activist Yvonne van Hertum of libel.

The court found her guilty of falsely accusing a man on internet of engaging a minor in erotic chat sessions.

She also published the man's address and picture. She has been given a prison sentence of four months, two of them suspended. The court concluded that the accusations were completely baseless.

The judges stressed the gravity of the offence, saying slander often affects victims for a long time.

In their verdict the judges weighed the fact that Van Hertum had so far failed to offer an apology or retract her accusations.
