The Netherlands is in the grips of a flu epidemic according to data released today by the National Influenza Centre on Friday.

AMSTERDAM -- The epidemic is particularly affecting the middle of the country. The number of cases of flu has been above average for the last two weeks. On average around 5 people per 10,000 of the population have flu, but the figure is presently double that. Children aged under four years are particularly at risk.

The annual flu epidemic usually starts in the first week of January, and this year's outbreak is progressing as normal.

Meanwhile, south of the border in Belgium, 4,000 people can be expected to die in the present epidemic, according to predictions by an Antwerp doctor reported in the local press. This is double the figure for an average year.
