THE HAGUE – Animal shelters saw a sharp increase in the number of stray dogs that have been dropped off, the animal protection authorities announced on Thursday. There are 10 percent more dogs than last year, a total of more than 1,000 animals, a spokesperson said.

He does not know what has caused this increase. "I hope it doesn't become a trend. We didn't see this happening last year."

Many animal shelters are already full and the summer holiday has not even started, the Nederlands Dagblad reported on Thursday after surveying shelters. The animal protection agency confirms that shelters are full and may have to stop accepting animals soon.
