Some 37,000 signatures have been collected for a petition calling on parliament to back a bill that would ban ritual slaughter in which animals have their throats slit without first being stunned.

The petition was drawn up by the Benelux branch of the World Society for the Protection of Animals WSPA. It will be presented to the Dutch parliament on Tuesday, the WSPA says.

On Wednesday, parliament will discuss a bill submitted by the Animal Rights Party to ban unstunned ritual slaughter. The bill has met with fierce opposition from orthodox Muslims and Jews.
