Amsterdam's cultural season opens in rain
The poor weather has not put people off visiting the 34th edition of Amsterdam’s Uitmarkt – the annual opening of the new theatre season.
In spite of heavy showers plenty of punters armed with brollies are in and around Amsterdam’s Museum Square and Leidse Plein. Previews of the upcoming season can be seen for free in various theatres and outdoor stages.
Nevertheless, an outdoor performance by Rotterdam’s Ballet Rotterdam had to be cancelled. But other artists made the best of it. Rapper Lange Frans got the audience to wave their umbrellas to the beat.
Indoor performances were popular with long queues forming in front of the theatres on the Leidseplein.
On Sunday, there will be performances by the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic and the Netherlands Radio Choir. The Netherlands Broadcasting Music Centre has been particularly hard hit by government cuts. The budget for the Radio Chamber Philharmonic is being scrapped altogether.
The Uitmarkt will finish on Sunday evening with its traditional musical sing-along to songs from Miss Saigon and Zorro to the accompaniment of the Metropole Orchestra which is also part of the Broadcasting Music Centre.
