Amsterdam urged to recover Gay Capital role
Amsterdam should recover its lead role as Gay Capital, say two Dutch parties.
The governing liberal VVD and the opposition Labour parties are calling for more gay events. They are also urging new organisations to promote Amsterdam as a gay-friendly city. The two parties launched the plea in a joint statement on Sunday.
Amsterdam has recently lost much of its appeal as Gay Capital, the parties warn. The number of cases of homophobic violence against men and women has been rising, while many gay bars have closed.
