Amsterdam to crack down on sex offenders

Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan has called for judges to ensure that people convicted of violent crimes and paedophilia will be kept away from their victims once they have served their prison sentences.

Amsterdam is currently participating in a trial project in which the judiciary alerts the municipality whenever a violent criminal or sex offender is released from jail. The municipal authorities then inform the victims in a bid to prevent surprise confrontations. The authorities also take measures to reduce unrest in neighbourhoods that could be affected.

The mayor currently lacks powers to enforce such measures, his spokesperson says in a local newspaper. The mayor is therefore urging judges who convict violent criminals and sex offenders to impose additional measures, such as a mandatory removal or a street ban. In a recent letter to Deputy Security and Justice Minister Fred Teeven, the mayor called for such measures to become part and parcel of public prosecutors’ sentencing demands. cl
