Amsterdam sex abuser confesses 83 cases
The chief suspect in the Amsterdam child day-care scandal, Robert Mikelsons, has now confessed to 83 cases of child sex abuse, the Dutch authorities report. All the parents involved have been informed.
At the end of last year, Amsterdam city council said 64 children had been abused by the suspect. Detectives are currently searching his computers for pictures of the children he had mentioned in his statements. The first matches were found last week, according to the Public Prosecutor’s office. No information was given as to the number of children featured in the photographs or the exact nature of the abuse.
The police are seeking evidence to corroborate Robert Mikelsons’ statements. The parents have been asked to supply photos of their children at different ages. The digitised photos will be processed by face recognition software. If this proves unsuccessful, the police will view each photo individually. This labour-intensive process will take “a considerable time”, the police say. Possible matches will be discussed only with the parents of the child in question.
The massive child-abuse scandal came to light a month ago. Robert Mikelsons, originally from Latvia, is suspected of sexually abusing very young children in his care at daycare centres and as a babysitter. Two other men were also arrested, one of them Mr Mikelsons’ partner. The case was uncovered when an infant at one of the centres was identified in child pornography that surfaced in the United States.
