Amsterdam marks Aids Memorial Day

21st May 2011, Comments 0 comments

Aids Memorial Day is being marked today in Amsterdam’s Dominicus Church.

The event honours all the women, men and children who have died of the disease, both in Holland and across the world.

The event is open to the public and has been designed to appeal to people of different backgrounds and cultures.

People will be able to light candles placed on a large Aids ribbon, the international symbol expressing solidarity with HIV and Aids victims.

Representatives from all continents will light a candle for those who died of the disease in their continent.

After a series of brief speeches, the names of the victims will be read out, before white balloons will be released from a bridge in central Amsterdam. cl
