Amsterdam airport passenger figures soar
Nearly two million more passengers travelled through Amsterdam's Schiphol airport last year as the aviation sector emerged from the global recession, Dutch operator Schiphol Group said on Monday.
"In 2010, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol welcomed 45.3 million passengers," an increase of 3.8 percent on the 43.6 million who visited in 2009, a statement said.
Cargo transport grew 16 percent to 1.5 million tonnes.
"Emerging from the recession, the aviation sector has been able to turn around the negative trend that characterised 2009 and started growing again," Schiphol Group president Jos Nijhuis said in the statement.
"That recovery looks set to continue this year."
Last year, the airport was the fifth biggest in Europe and 14th in the world based on passenger numbers, according to Schiphol Group.
