Amsterdam aims to be 5th European fashion city
Amsterdam hopes to move up in the European fashion rankings from sixth to fifth place. At present, London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona and Madrid make up the big five.
Around 50 foreign journalists are coming to the Dutch capital to cover the 15th Amsterdam International Fashion Week AIFW which begins on Wednesday. The last edition in January only attracted 25 international media.
The AIFW is also negotiating with the city council to promote the international event. The fashion sector generates 14 billion euros in the Netherlands in imports and exports.
Amsterdam's Fashion Week has won the title Best International Fashion Week Award 2011 from British magazine for its work in the area of sustainabilit and innovation in the fashion sector.
The Fashion Week opens with a show by design sisters Spijkers & Spijkers. Amsterdam desinger Tony Cohen will also show his collectin later in the evening.
The Fashion Week is essentially a trade fair for professionals, but a limited number of tickets are available to the public for the catwalk shows. There is also Fashion Week Downtown in which smaller events are organised in various venues, such as galeries, clubs, shops and at parties. Three shopping routes have been set out in the city for fashion lovers.
