THE HAGUE – The costs for the general amnesty scheme that came into effect last summer will "come to at least EUR 6 billion," the Volkskrant reports. VVD MP Henk Kamp calculated this during the debate on the budget for the justice ministry in Parliament on Wednesday.

In his calculations Kamp assumed that at least 15,000 former asylum seekers ("a very conservative estimate") would need welfare benefits, rent subsidies, healthcare, education and old age pensions for a period of 20 years. "That costs EUR 20,000 per person per year, so EUR 6 billion. At least," the VVD MP said.
