THE HAGUE – All schoolbooks will be free next year. There will be no cutbacks on the child benefit. And the government will earmark EUR 40 million to give children from poor families more opportunities. These are the most important outcomes of the debate in Parliament on the budget for 2008.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende agreed to satisfy these requests from the Christian democrat CDA, Labour PvdA and ChristenUnie. The cabinet will consider their other proposals but will have to look critically at how they can be financed.

The parliamentary factions of the three coalition parties also want EUR 100 million earmarked for defence, a cap on the increase to the diesel tax, and more money for smaller schools in rural areas.
