ALKMAAR – The public prosecution department in Alkmaar has charged Pepijn V. with manslaughter for the killing of 16-year-old high school student Gerd Nan van Wijk from Heerhugowaard, the authorities announced today.

The examining judge extended the pre-trial detention of the 17-year-old suspect for another two weeks on Thursday. The justice department says the boy has given a full confession.

The investigation shows that he used no weapons when striking Van Wijk on the head. Eye-witness to the incident had claimed earlier that they saw V. use a knuckle duster.

The investigation also indicated that Van Wijk did indeed die as a result of the blows to the head he received in the school yard of the Jan Arentsz College in Alkmaar. The victim was a student of the school.
