AMSTERDAM -- The Alkmaar Medical Centre temporarily shut down four operating rooms because of problems with its ventilation system. The rooms are in the Outpatient Department and are used for minor operations.

The hospital says patients were never at risk and that the air quality fully meets regulations.

The investigation into the system began after recent problems in hospitals in Lelystad and Emmeloord. In both towns, operating rooms were closed when inspectors discovered that their air was not sterile.
