Ajax trainer puts poor result down to bad luck

In the Dutch soccer championships, Ajax lost its home match against Heerenveen 0-1 last night.

AMSTERDAM - Danijel Pranjic scored the only goal of the match for Heerenveen in the second half.

The Amsterdam team finished the game with only ten players after Thomas Vermaelen was given a red card.

This is the third match in a row that an Ajax player has been sent off the pitch.

The poor performance by Ajax is good news for Alkmaar's AZ, which faces Sparta in an away match today. If AZ wins it could increase its lead to nine points.

Ajax trainer Marco van Basten put the disappointing result down to "bad luck". Nevertheless, he remains defiant with 14 matches to go in the competition.

"We had better not take any notice of our position right now and look at ourselves instead."
